In a horrific incident near Mezalichuang village in Sagaing Township, a civilian was brutally killed by government military forces and local militia members. The area, known for its scenic tourist attractions, has become a hotspot for violent clashes amid Myanmar’s ongoing conflict.
The victim was accused of being a member of the People’s Defence Force (PDF), the armed wing of the National Unity Government opposing the ruling military junta. A disturbing video, recently released by defectors who witnessed the killing, shows the man being interrogated about his alleged PDF affiliation. During the interrogation, a voice is heard commanding, “I don’t want to hear any gunfire.” The man was then stabbed, had his leg hacked with a machete, and was ultimately beheaded. The perpetrators gruesomely posed with the victim’s body, placing his severed head on his torso, before dissecting the body and disposing of it in the Irrawaddy River.
The killing, which took place in July 2024, only came to light recently when the video surfaced, shared by witnesses who later defected to the PDF. The graphic nature of the incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for accountability amid escalating violence in Myanmar.
