An Indian Air Force aircraft bound for London’s Gatwick Airport crashed just minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday afternoon, June 12, 2025. The plane went down in a densely populated residential area near the airport, triggering panic and chaos on the ground.
So far, there is no official confirmation of fatalities, although dramatic visuals from the scene show burning debris, thick black smoke, and victims being carried away on stretchers into ambulances. Air India confirmed via social media that it is currently verifying details and will provide further updates as they become available.
According to Reuters, the flight carried 242 individuals, including 217 adults and 11 children. Nationalities aboard included 169 Indian citizens, 43 British nationals, 7 Portuguese passengers, and 1 Canadian.
Flight data from Flightradar24 identified the aircraft as a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Ahmedabad air traffic control confirmed that the plane departed at 13:39 local time and issued a “Mayday” distress call, signaling a critical emergency. Contact was lost shortly afterward.
A chilling video circulated online shows the plane flying low over a residential neighborhood before disappearing from view, followed by a massive plume of smoke rising above homes. The scene revealed charred wreckage scattered across the crash site and emergency personnel rushing to aid the injured.
All flight operations at Ahmedabad Airport have been immediately suspended. As of this report, Boeing has not issued a response regarding the incident.
